University graduates face a complex living environment, full of ethical and moral dilemmas. These programs will help prepare today's students to address these dilemmas.
Since 1906, Catholic students at The University of Iowa have drawn together to share their faith. Today, the Newman Center continues to promote development within a faith community and prepares students as disciples for the Church and for the world. Today's students are searching for ways to strengthen their foundation of faith after they leave The University of Iowa and the daily support of the Newman Center.
FACT - parishes around the country need help with basic ministerial tasks. Over the past 30 years, the number of priests per 1,000 Catholics in Iowa has fallen by 59 percent. The decline is not just in Iowa - parishes around the United States are facing this challenge.
To address these changing demographics, Catholics must supplement the efforts of a shrinking cadre of priests with lay persons who are capable of performing essential tasks in their parishes. The Newman Center, with its professional staff and modern facility, is well positioned to play an important role in preparing students as lay ministers who are and will be greatly needed in parishes across the country.
While the Ministry Development Program focuses its efforts on training lay ministers to assist the parishes they eventually join, the Scholarship Program helps prepare students by supplementing their college courses with a circle of support in which the students can contemplate and strengthen their own religious beliefs.
Forms for application to these programs are in PDF format. Adobe Reader or Apple's Preview will open the documents and allow you to view and print them. If you have any questions about the forms or the Grants please contact Fr. Ed Fitzpatrick here at the Newman Center.
