Securing Their Future... Reaching Their Potential

In 1906 the Newman Club was established at the University of Iowa.  For over 100 years, Roman Catholic students have been served through the ministries, education and outreach programs of the Newman Center.  Each year, over 1200 students regularly participate in group activities, attend mass, celebrate their faith and prepare to be the future leaders in the Church and society as Catholic professionals.  We are blessed with the opportunity to secure this foundation, increase those served, and expand the programs we offer.

We have embarked on a campaign to raise at least $4 Million.

The funds will be applied to 4 major areas that were identified through a year long process including focus groups, benefactors, staff, and students.

Acquire Newman Center Building and Property - $2,000,000
The Newman Center had the opportunity to purchase the building and property from the Diocese of Davenport in July, 2005.  Owning the property and building ensures the ministry’s future for generations of Roman Catholics who will come to study at the Univeristy of Iowa.  This fund will allow the Newman Center to fully retire the debt related to this purchase.

Expand Outreach and Education Ministries - $1,000,000
The Newman Center focuses on something the University cannot: a Catholic education.  The Outreach Ministry will concentrate on establishing one-on-one relationships with special audiences (undergrads, graduate students, and University of Iowa faculty and staff).  This fund will establish an endowment to add a staff person to oversee the creation of new outreach and education ministries.

Sustaining the Ministry/Developing Future Initiatives - $750,000
The campaign will raise $500,000 to supplement the Center’s Annual Appeal over five years to cover a wide range of functions necessary to keep the Newman Center in good condition.  This will ensure program funding to support the current budget during the active campaign.  The additional $250,000 will fund the establishment of a development office and full-time development director for five years.  This campaign will serve as a catalyst for ongoing development and investment in the Newman Center ministry.  At the end of the campaign there will be a sustainable development process in place.

Liturgical Ministry Formation - $250,000
One of our primary functions at the Newman Center is to provide good liturgical celebrations for the Catholic students, faculty and staff, in addition to the many parents, alumni, friends and benefactors who visit throughout the year.  Providing these liturgical experiences requires the active participation of the congregation with the assistance of many music ministers, liturgical ministers of the Word and Eucharist.  The process of identifying, educating and forming these student ministers requires considerable effort.  Each week, over 55 volunteers are needed to support the 5 weekend and 5 week day masses.  Income from this endowment will provide the funds necessary to support student assistance for the current staff overseeing these important ministries.

We have an incredible opportunity to make a lasting impact on the Newman Center community.  We have embarked on a multi-year campaign to raise at least $4M.  This is a realistic but challenging goal requiring prayer and support from all those who are able to help.  Together we will secure the future and reach the potential of the ministry with which our Lord Jesus entrusted us.
