INVOLVED STUDENT ASSEMBLY
There will be an Involved Student Assembly right after the 11:00 AM Mass on Sunday, September 26th in the chapel. Students involved in our many activities will be present. It will be an opportunity to get to know them. The theme is involvement and discussion about ways of involving others. The assembly will conclude with a meal. The experience will end by 1:30 PM. If you wish to attend sign the list at the reception desk.

TRANSITIONS - A GROUP FOR FRESHMEN
The beginning of college life can be daunting for any new student. It is easy to feel lost in the shuffle and be uncertain where to begin your college journey. The goal of the Transitions group is to ease the transition from High School to College that first year students face. This student-led group helps introduce first year students to the U.I. as well as the Newman Center. Our central belief is that Christian faith and growth can accompany and compliment the college experience. Through the group you will have time for many social activities, discussion and introductions to other students at the Newman Center. Go ahead and drop Troy a note at troy@newman-ic.org or just stop by his office if you have any questions. Every Thursday evening at 9:00 PM we meet at the horseshoe desk upstairs, then head to the game room downstairs. Feel free to bring a friend along.

LECTOR AND EUCHARISTIC MINISTER TRAINING
Our Ministry at the Newman Center relies heavily on your help and willingness to volunteer. New Ministers who signup will have the opportunity to schedule an appointment during the week to receive training. It is easy to schedule an individual appointment with Troy. We are looking for an additional 50 people to help with the Eucharistic Ministry, and 30 to help with Lectoring. Email troy@newman-ic.org to get signed up.

HOLY HOUR AND EVENING PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS
On Tuesday evenings from 8:00-9:00 PM we will have exposition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament as well as Evening Prayer. This will take place in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel (off of the Main Chapel). This time of prayer will be offered in a special way for an increase of vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, religious life, and committed lay service within the Church. Please consider joining us for this hour with the Lord in which we beg the “Master of the Harvest” to send more laborers into the field. Our first holy hour will be Tuesday, August 31st.

PRESENTATION OF JOHN HENRY CARDINAL NEWMAN
Michael Novak, the George Frederick Jewitt Scholar in Religion and Philosophy and Public Policy at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C. will share reflections on the importance of Cardinal Newman to campus ministry after the 11:00 AM Mass on Sunday, September 12th. Reception will follow.

DISTRIBUTION OF THE EUCHARIST AT UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS
Those wanting to participate in this ministry will be required to attend a training session at University Hospitals on Sunday afternoon, September 19th, 2-3PM. If you check this interest on the registration card, you will receive a mailing with further information.

ALPHA IS COMING
Beginning September 12th the ALPHA program will run for 10 weeks. ALPHA is an introduction to Christianity for some and a renewal for life long Catholic Christians. It will be held following the 6:00 PM Mass and always begin with a sit-down meal followed by presentation and discussion. This will be the 5th year we have had the ALPHA course and it has been very successful and inspirational. An explanatory flyer and sign-up sheet are available in the gathering space.

PRAYER AND STUDY SPACE
The Newman Center is like your parish in that we always have weekend services. But it is also a student center, you can use it all week. In particular, there are study spaces; quiet places for prayer and reflection ( the main chapel and the Blessed Sacrament Chapel). The staff is here to be of service to you. You can make appointments to talk or just stop by to chat.

RCIA - RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION
This is a process of entering the Catholic community through prayer, introspection, information and inspiration. Do you know someone who is interested? Maybe that person is YOU. Please extend them an invitation and call Fr. Thom at the Newman Center, 337-3106, or e-mail him at thom@newman-ic.org

DAILY SERVICES

HAMBURG INN DONATION PROGRAM TO THE NEWMAN CENTER
Hamburg Inn would like to remind everyone about our tithe program. Just tell your members that every time they dine at Hamburg Inn 10% of their meal ticket will be donated to your organization. It’s easy; just bring in your weekly service bulletin so we can attach the meal ticket to it and we will track your member’s purchases and send out a check to your organization. It is our way of helping to support the Good Work you do. Over $800.00 has already been donated!

WORLD YOUTH DAY 2011 IN MADRID SPAIN

The approximate cost of the trip would be $3250 per student. This includes travel, lodging, two meals per day, registration, a prayer book and pilgrim guide. There would be fundraising opportunities to help cover the cost of the trip as well as possible sponsorship by benefactors. The dates of the trip would be from August 10-22, 2011. Note that this would be right before school starts in the fall, so students would need to plan accordingly. If you are interested (or even curious) about this trip please contact Fr. Thom at the Newman Center at (319) 337-3106 ext. 106 or e-mail him at thom@newman-ic.org.
