Welcome to the Newman Center

Antioch 53 Group

Summer Schedule
Summer is a little less busy here at the Newman Center. However, we are still planning many activities and groups throughout the Summer months. Sometimes planning takes place very quickly and notice is short so drop by the Newman Center often to take advantage of these opportunities.

Events and Activities of interest to New Students

What is the Newman Center at the University of Iowa and what makes it so special? Here at the Newman Center we often refer to ourselves as a 'home away from home' for students. Since there is no one definition of home or family we attempt to offer a variety of events that will catch your interest.

As a New Student we would like you to consider a few, specific events to put on your calendar. These events will give you a good idea of what we offer as well as introducing you to your fellow Freshmen. Getting involved early will make your first month at school an easy time. You will see your friends in classes, be able to meet up for dinner in the dorms and easily find people to go to Mass with on the weekends. Freshmen BBQ Moving-In-Weekend: August Sat. 23 - Sun. 24 (after Sat. 4:30 and Sun. 4:00 Masses) This event is exactly what it sounds like. Come join us for some food and let us tell you the first things you can do as a Freshmen to make your life a little easier the first two weeks of the Semester. The dinner will provide a time for you to briefly meet the Staff at the Newman Center and also find some people who live in your Halls and likely even on your floor. The meal starts at 5:30pm on Saturday and 5:00pm on Sunday Transitions Group for Freshmen Transitions is a group for Freshmen, led by fellow students to help you find your place in the college atmosphere. We will have sessions purely for social fun , and sessions to explore our Faith. Meetings are weekly throughout the semester beginning Thursday August 28th, at 9pm in the gameroom downstairs. Contact Troy for answers to your questions. Thursday Night Mass at 10:00pm - for all students At 10pm every Thursday Night 50 or more students gather for an informal liturgy. At the Newman Center we know we are not defined by our building. It is the students who come here that shape our events and create our atmosphere. At Thursday Night Mass (TNM for short) the homily involves the students who share their experiences and opinions on the topic of the night. Sharing is voluntary, and sometimes it is just nice to sit back and listen to what others have to say.Antioch Sept. 19 and 20 - For Freshmen and Sophomores new to the Newman Center Early each Semester we have Antioch. It is 24 hours to get out of your dorm room and get to know some people from your own Hall and from around campus. It can feel odd sometimes trying to get to know people when all you have in common is living on the same floor. Antioch is...

Events for All Students

RCIA - Becoming Catholic at the Newman Center The RCIA process is a faith journey undertaken over several weeks and in successive stages. Its purpose is to initiate adults into the Roman Catholic Faith Community. It is not simply the process of changing religions or beginning a religious life. The process begins Sept. 10th and spans both semesters with the Sacraments of Initiation being received at the Easter Vigil. Sessions continue through the Easter Season. Contact Fr. Jeff for more detailed information.

Marriage Preparation dates for the Newman Center With great joy we congratulate you on your intention to receive the Sacrament of Marriage in the Roman Catholic Church. You should make contact with Jacque no later than 6 months before the proposed date of your marriage. Once you have determined, with Jacque's help, that it is appropriate for you to take the classes at the Newman Center keep in mind that the Winter Orientation Session is January 28th at 10:00am.

Newman Singers - how to get involved A vibrant and living sign of the presence of God here at the Newman Center is our music ministry. Under the direction of Joe Mattingly, our music ministry includes cantors, instrumentalists, small groups, and the Newman Singers. The Newman Singers are a liturgical and concert choir and ensemble that, in addition to ministering frequently here at the Newman Center, travel throughout the United States, singing for parishes, schools, conventions, and youth gatherings. Joe will be happy to asnwer your questions.

Antioch and Journey Retreats for Fall The Antioch and Journey Retreats are our two largest retreats each semester. Antioch is geared towards the Freshmen and Sophomores addressing the challenges of finding social ties in the college community. Journey is geared towards upperclassmen and graduate students, providing a weekend away from the rigors of college life. It allows students to find a calmer, centered place in their thoughts while providing times for group discussion and exploration of faith and life. The date for Antioch is Sept. 19-20, and Journey is Oct. 24-26. Contact Troy with any questions.

Knights of Columbus College Council Starting with a group of 34 men our Council at the Newman Center began a mission of service to our members here at the Center, as well as to the community in which we live. There is no set agenda, each year the Knights look ahead to see what is being offered, where interests lie and what is needed. This is an excellent opportunity for men at the Newman Center to get involved in helping the community as well as each other. Being at college means you are often busy so there are no mandatory meetings to attend 'or else'. We have a monthly meeting on the third Sunday of the Month at 5pm in the Old Chapel where we take care of routine business and have social time. Generally, college Knights perform various activities in five different categories; Church, Council, Community, Family and Youth. Contact Troy or Fr. Ed with any questions.

Strengths Quest The challenges faced by students are not limited to reading, writing, and arithmetic. Often, they lie in gaining direction, making decisions, and building self-confidence. Fortunately, the keys to successfully meeting these challenges already exist within you: Your own natural talents will be the source of your greatest achievements. At the Newman Center we have taken this philosophy to heart and will provide the materials necessary for you to begin the process of discovering your strengths. You will be given a code to access an online site where you will complete an assessment. Your top 5 strengths will be given to you and then the next phase begins: a few group meetings will be scheduled where we will discuss the different strengths and how you can see them fitting into your daily life both at school and in your faith. Check the Bulletin for initial meeting times.
